Topaz is one of the birthstones for November. In the Middle Ages, carved gemstones were believed to be natural wonders possessing special powers. If worn on the left arm, some believed a Topaz amulet could protect the wearer from dark magic and greed. In Hindu traditions, Topaz is associated astrologically with Jupiter. Some scholars trace the name’s origin back to Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, where the word "topas" or "tapaz" means “fire.”
Others believe the name comes from "topazos", a word meaning “to seek” and the name given to the unique gems discovered on the ancient Topazios Island in the Red Sea, now called "Zabargad". However, the island never produced Topaz, but was instead, a main source of Peridot.
